I DID have some angst in giving up salt because I lost all of my recipes in the process and it was almost like starting all over again. What I have learned to do is to depend on spices and fresh herbs to compensate. If you use enough spice and herbs you won't notice the salt is missing. I don't miss the after effects of salt at all: the dry mouth, puffy hands and eyes, etc. My blood pressure dropped a lot as a result of quitting salt. My favorite spice for hot cooked veggies and rice is CURRY powder. I buy all different brands and they vary a lot. My current favorite is Morton & Bassett which is less hot and seems to have more cardomon which is rich and flavorful. I always use a generous amount of cinnamon in my oatmeal and other cooked cereals OR cinnamon and nutmeg OR pumpkin pie spice. I also like CHILI powder for a different taste OR ITALIAN spices oregano and basil. In salads I either chop up fresh basil or mint which helps in skipping salad dressing. I also top salads with a fruit, beans, tomato. Keep in mind that even dried cereals and salad dressing have sodium so I eat very very little prepared foods. I buy canned beans (Eden No-salt) and frozen veggies.
