I did my fasts unsupervised. (Yes, I broke rule #1, guilty as charged.) Since I was pretty healthy, I figured that a 1 week fast would be safe. I had been following a 100% vegan diet for two years and was taking no medications. I had read the book thoroughly twice before starting the first fast (and read it again during that fast), and was familiar with all of the dos and do-not-dos. Prior to the fast I had read "Eat to Live" and was following its optimal nutrition methodology for a month prior to the first fast. Also, I am (and always have been) a risk taker - motorcycling, ski jumping, hang gliding, solo backpacking, etc. I figured "What the heck, my ancestors fasted without supervision - so can I." Besides, throughout the book, Dr Fuhrman professes the inherent safety of fasting for the vast majority of people - its just that there are a few rare cases of people that experience problems and need the supervision. I rolled the dice and found out that fasting was safe for me. I would not necessarily recommend that others do the same. If you read all the reviews of the book at Amazon, you'll hear a common complaint about the book and that is he talks about the wonders of fasting but then says you must be supervised - and the problem is that there are only a handful of doctors that are trained to do so. The True North facility is one of the only ones.

Dr Fuhrman does say that if you are relatively healthy and taking no medications, a three day fast is perfectly safe. Also, you are in luck - fibromyalgia is one of the disorders that responds favorably to fasting.

Also, be sure to read the article here at VegSource: "Fasting -- Back To The Future - The Rediscovery of Water-Only Fasting" by Alan Goldhamer, D.C. He is one of the guys that run the True North facility. Also there is another VegSource article: "My Fasting Experience" by Mark Epstein.

The only problem with fasting is that once you learn about the miraculous healing properties and experience them firsthand, you want to "convert" everyone you know!
