I stumbled upon McDougall's MWL book back in 1998. Reading his book was like a light bulb -- wow, I thought, this makes so much sense! I was successful at losing weight and maintained it for a while. I never stopped being a vegetarian after that, but did start eating dairy again. In 2003 my weight really increased and I went back to a McDougall style diet and lost about 15 pounds which I had maintained. I will say, McDougall is just awesome. I credit him with my introduction to the vegan way of eating, though my diet now more closely resembles Fuhrman's ETL. I don't know how I found Fuhrman's book either... but I am glad I did. I have not been able to lose weight beyond a certain point until now, well, at least not without feeling hungry. I am at high risk for diabetes, even though my weight is actually in the normal range (by BMI standards). In Fuhrman's book I was able to find an explanation as to why I could be insulin resistant with only ten or twenty extra pounds on my body. I liked the idea of reversing diabetes and maximizing my intake of vitamins and minerals from food. I have been following ETL for 3 1/2 weeks and no longer have the cloudiness and fatigue that I believe was related to blood sugar issues. I am not having cravings and have no problem not eating the junk food that others bring into the house -- and that was a huge problem for me before. Fruit seriously tastes like candy to me now. I have lost about 6 pounds so far and would like to lose about 20 more. And I have not been hungry, which is amazing since I figure I am comsuming only about 1200 calories per day.
