I never followed McDougall specifically, but did do something very much like it several years ago. I found the craving for nuts/oils almost unbearable, and eventually went off what I was doing. I was definitly primed for ETL when I read the book, because I use FitDay to track my nutrient intake and was having trouble getting my nutrient rates as high as I like unless I ate more calories than I wanted when eating grains. But I really didn't know how to put that into practice. ETL proved quickly to work by what I'm seeing - how I surpass the vitamin and mineral RDAs every day. More importantly, I feel terrific, and after 4 weeks, I'm totally adjusted to the food, in fact have come to LOVE it. It is amazing how much my tastes have changed. Surprisingly, I don't experience temptations to cheat any longer. It was difficult the first week or two limiting grains/starches, but mostly because that was my habit of cooking/meal preparation. On the terrific bit, I too have more energy, my skin looks worlds better, and I've shed a bout of depression that plagues me every winter.
