When we lived in Southeastern Kentucky and were involved in GED training, empowerment among the poor, etc., we had visitors from Lesotho, a small country surrounded by South Africa (I think)...anyway, the actual Queen of Lesotho and some educational cabinet members of the country toured places in the U.S. such as ours to get ideas about dealing with literacy, poverty, empowerment, etc. They stopped at our place after having been in the U.S. for a couple of weeks...and commented on how much weight they all had gained just in the several days they'd been here. They were laughing and happy about it, delighted with pizza and fried chicken, etc.,...I wasn't vegan or even vegetarian then and that was a couple of decades ago, but I still felt the sting of saddness to realize how quickly they'd gained around 8 lbs. each (they still looked pretty skinny to me!) in coming from a rural country in Africa to touring poverty spots in the U.S. I remember thinking if they stayed here for a whole year they'd probably be typical American blimps in no time at all. It's a very sad thing what western nations have done to themselves and anybody else who comes to live here!
