I use an Apple/Mac so there is a key on the keyboard to turn off sound which is what I usually do online because I hate hearing YOU'VE GOT MAIL shouted at me. I turned on my sound and I DID hear the sounds you were referring to. Look arounf your computer and you ought to be able to figure out how to turn off the sound. There may be a knob on one of the speakers if you have accessory speakers. You could unplug the speakers. Or you might double-click on My Computer if you are using Windows and look for something that says "Sound" and see if you can turn it off in your system.
