Chiming in here, I had long hair forever and was attached to it when I was younger, wouldn't let anybody cut it shorter, it was one of my better features. I'm over being vain though! So I let my haircutter who is a really good haircutter cut it short, maybe just above chin-length. Your hair can be short but not severe. I also let it show grey for a while but last month I let someone color it kind of a reddish color (I have dark brown, almost black hair) and it is so much fun, I really do love it. When I get it colored I have it highlighted so most of the haircolor stuff doesn't soak into my scalp. I go back and forth though. I swear I don't care about the grey but then with color it's just so pretty and makes me feel good, I guess it counts as a guilty pleasure along with dark chocolate.
