A wide variety -- The Burning Bed by Faith McNulty -- old but a Goodwill find. It's the story of a domestic violence victim who set fire to the bed her husband was in, and goes through the trial. Gruesome, but I've spent years working for victims, and DV is one of my areas. So it's just normal to me, although horrifying to most, because they don't see (or don't want to see) the abuse around them.

My other finds are also from Goodwill (I admit a definite fondness for thrift stores!)

Mainstay - for the well spouse of the chronically ill, by Maggie Strong. Very good book if you know anyone in that situation. 1988, so look for it in a used store like Powell's. One small example "everyone always asks about HIM, but no one ever asks how am I doing!"

The Mitford series by Jan Karon I just keep rotating through them when I can't sleep at night, along with the books by --

Karen Kingsbury I like clean simple story lines**, with well done but not obvious writing. They will probably never be studied in a Literature class, but they are easy reads for me, and always give me something to think about - even if I've read them more than once.

**And unlike my 85 year old mother, who doesn't have to work and so can read even more than I do, I don't like "romance" books.
