I'm extremely small-boned and thin - "bird bones", as my doctor says. Been vegan 24 years, vegetarian 16 years before that. My mom has osteoporosis. Every risk factor in the book! oh, and I don't smoke or drink, but I knock back 25 cups of strong black coffee every day. so when we did my density test my doctor was preparing me for the worst, and it turns out, my bones are matchstick-thin but dense and hard as rocks. Turns out all those years of backpacking with half my own weight in the pack protected me.
It's not too late for you. fairly low-impact, weight-bearing exercise can really help.
