I think all this challenging packaging started with the Tylenol scare back in.....when the heck was that?? After that, manufacturers started overpackaging everything and child-proofing this and that, making it impossible to get anything open. I don't know when it spread to the food industry, but it did. Of course, I'd rather know that products can't be tampered with than wonder if they're safe. I've never had a problem with tomatoes and olive oil fermenting. It sounds like they just have really difficult-to-open packaging -- and they should listen to their customers!! :-) ~Jo
