Dear all, I am very surprised to find that many others are suffering from this terrible obsession. I had no idea that this was such a common disorder. It is a thief of time and money and the activity itself may at first bring some relief but eventually becomes devoid of any pleasure and guilt is the overriding emotion. I believe that we engage in this behaviour due to the affluent society in which we live, we are not challenged by survival or danger in our lives and the result is that we feel empty and need to fill this with an activity that gives us a temporary "fix". After reading so many posts of people who are suffering with a similar disorder I feel so inspired to stop, I don’t want this to govern my life for years to come and would love to put the time and money into something productive that will make myself and others happy. I recently started taking citalopram, which is a selective serotonin uptake inhibitor. It has helped so much with my compulsive behaviour including chewing and spitting but also smoking. I can highly recommend this anti- depressant but it must be combined with therapy, which I am currently seeking. It is wrong to just except your situation it is right to fight for your life and your normality and happiness, which is in reach if you make a stance and decide to get help.
