I have this habit, too. It's, of course, tied in with eating disorder symptoms but I have found that I typically crave chewing and spitting because I'm not taking in enough calories, it seems. I have a BodyBugg armband that measures how many calories you burn and although I've only had it a few days, it's reading over 3000 calorie burn. I'm a personal trainer and I work out and stay active religiously, but there's no way in Hades I'm "eating" 3000+ calories, though my weight remains. :/ Unfortunately, I believe it's due to the chewing and spitting. Once I got my armband, though, it has helped with this habit so far. It self-adjusts accuracy based on your results (you log your food, etc.) so I'm obsessed with including every calorie I consume. Since you can't really tell what the chewing and spitting contributes, I've done it far less. Was also down a pound this morning...interesting. Another HUGE consideration is nutrient deficiencies, such as iron-deficient anemia and/or vitamin/mineral deficiencies. E-mail me if you are interested in getting on a great vitamin/mineral supplement by Apex. I can set up an online account to give you 20% off monthly, they're inexpensive, and effective. This would help tremendously. Also, try to drink water, chew gum, take 100 steps---anything instead of c & s when you get the urge. Make a NEW habit :-)
