Subject:         My son needs to GAIN weight
Date: March 3, 2012 at 6:54 am PST

My son is 18 1/2, is 6' 2" (almost 2") and weighs less than 110lbs, sometimes nearly 105lbs. He was getting up to about 118 at one point but then got pneumonia almost 2 years ago and has never gained back what he lost. Then he got another bad cold last month and lost some more weight.

We eat very healthy and I cook from scratch. We try to avoid dairy products but do get a little here and there. When we do eat dairy, it's usually raw. We eat some meat, but not much. The meat is home grown, home butchered, home canned. Mostly we eat a lot of fruits, veggies, and whole grains.

I understand that he needs to eat more calories than he spends in a day in order to gain weight. I think he needs at least 3,000 calories each day. In order to help achieve this goal, he's been eating extra nuts, seeds and dehydrated fruits for snacks. Many around us are telling him to eat more cheese, drink a few glasses of milk a day, eat more meat, etc. But I am against this.

I was wondering about calorie powders that you drink? I don't want him to have a soy based powder but then I would prefer it to be vegan ... so the whey is out. Are there any suggestions? Part of me is wondering if the whey might be a good idea because he is so desperately skinny and if he loses any more weight, I fear for his health.

Any suggestions? It does not have to be a suggestion of a calorie drink!! Just any ideas you have would be great.

I wanted also to say that he works hard every day and usually has good endurance and a clear mind.

Thank you,
Joanne in MO
