If you are going to follow this regimen, then one cup of whole grains per day, maximum, is allowed. That would be in whole form as in brown rice, oatmeal, or wheat berries, not some highly refined product such as bagels, even those claiming to "contain" whole wheat flour. If you must have a bagel, then look for the Foods for Life brand which contain only whole, sprouted grains and no flour whatsoever. They also make good sliced bread for toast and sandwiches. There are other similar brands, but Foods for Life seems to be the most widely available. But even these very high quality bread products are to be consumed in moderation on the Fuhrman diet, if at all. As far as sodium is concerned, a rule of thumb is to never consume a product which has more milligrams of sodium than the number of calories in a serving. Foods for Life bread is right on the threshold, with 80 calories and 80 mg of sodium per serving.
