My suggestion is STOP treating lows with food. Most of us who have diabetes OVERTREAT our lows and even use lows as an excuse to ingest extra carbs several times a day.

Instead, I recommend you carry glucose tabs. The current guidelines for treating episodes of hypoglycemia is to take 15 carbs every 15 minutes until you achieve the desired reading.

If you have more that 2 hours to go til your next meal, also take 7 grams of protein. I suggest raw nuts, which are allowed on ETL. I will caution you against using processed peanut butters or PB crackers that have added sugars and preservatives that are totally not ETL. Raw nuts are easy to toss in your bag or pocket for treating. If you must do peanut butter, do the natural stuff. Also, try almond or cashew butters.

Finally, to prevent lows, I would:
1. Make sure you're eating enough protein during every meal.
2. Eat 6 smaller meals instead of 3 large meals (not ETL, but often necessary until meds are adjusted to your new eating habits).

I hope this helps.

Gloria
