I don't know about growing them inside but I did read a very promising article a while back about someone that grows figs in Connecticut. Most of his were planted in the ground and for the winter months he would protect the plants with straw, chicken wire, burlap and then plastic. Lots of work, but he determined it was worth it to have figs. He also kept some in large tubs that he brought in to a warm part of the basement or garage. See magazine: Kitchen Gardener, Feb/Mar 2000, No. 25. Out of print I believe but try a library. I kept the magazine because it has recipes.
