DedeGirl,

Another way of putting it would be to say that the same basic diet which allows people to achieve and maintain their ideal weight, also promotes optimal health and longevity. I think that Eat to Live is the greatest weight loss diet on earth. There are many ways of losing weight, but many of them aren't healthy, and with many diets it is extremely common to yo-yo and gain all the weight back.

The book entitled 'Eat to Live' (by Dr. Joel Fuhrman) is specifically geared toward weight loss which can be fairly rapid, and become permanent and sustained. The point is to teach us how to make permanent healthy changes, that we can actually sustain and enjoy forever. Yes, I said enjoy! I eat a very delicious and plentiful diet, which really satisfies me, and allows me to keep the weight off, and I thoroughly enjoy my food, and the way that eating this diet-style makes me feel. My relationship to food has totally changed so that I no longer have cravings for junk.

When we say that the same basic diet applies regardless of whether or not a person is losing weight, maintaining, or gaining, what we mean is that its basically the same whole foods, however, the person who is maintaining or gaining would focus on eating larger amounts of the things that are more calorie dense (like nuts, avocado, and starchy veggies) while a person losing weight would focus on filling up on larger portions of the non-starchy veggies in order to maximize the rate of weight loss.

If you want to learn more about ETL, you could either pick up a copy of the book, or check out Dr. Fuhrman's website. There is a public section of the website as well as a member's only support center, where you can get a really high level of support in your weight loss efforts from the other members as well as from Dr. Fuhrman himself. There is an 'Ask The Doctor' forum where you can get Dr. Fuhrman to answer any questions you have about weight loss or health. Dr. Fuhrman tries to turn us all into experts on nutrition and health, and I have really learned a lot, and gotten great support by being a member of the website.
