Hi Peg,
I'm not absolutely positive, but I seem to remember that Dr.
Fuhrman himself might be the exact same age as you, and he eats
this way too!
Anyway... I'm 48, and have been eating this way for quite awhile
now. I did lose weight, and I have much more energy than I ever
did before. I was never a high energy person, and this way of
eating has made a huge difference. There are a lot of people in the
world that believe they eat a healthy diet, and by typical standards
maybe they are right, however, many of us who switch to ETL come
to realize that what we ate before wasn't really as healthy as we
previously thought, and you might come to feel this way as well.
One of the things I've learned is that many of the foods I never
even thought of as being 'processed' actually are, so it has been a
real educational experience. For example, I now think of things
like olive oil and fruit juices as being processed 'junk foods', and
these are foods that many 'health conscious' people believe are
healthy foods. Another big problem with my prior diet had to do
with a high sodium intake which is something I had been unaware
of and unconcerned about. Excessive sodium intake is a very
widespread problem, with such major health ramifications that the
American Medical Association has recently been warning the public
about it. Dr. Fuhrman has also warned about negative effects of
sodium consumption that are of particular concern to those
following a vegetarian diet. Some people who say they eat a
healthy diet include low-fat dairy products in their diet, and ETL
teaches us that dairy products are not healthy foods.
It is only natural that people following the ETL diet-style will say
that they previously ate a less healthy diet. Sometimes the
situation is that they thought they were eating a healthy diet
before, and found out it wasn't, and sometimes its because they
knew all along they were never eating healthy. Either way, your
really can't get any healthier than ETL because the whole dietstyle
is centered around nutritional density.
Anyway... I think its great that you are making the 6 week
commitment. That is really the key thing that will personally
answer all your questions. In other words, its only by making this
committment that you will be able to find out for yourself whether
it is going to make a difference in your energy or not. Right now
you are thinking that whatever you've been doing has been 'pretty
healthy', so why should ETL make much difference? So the
questions really are 1) 'How healthy have you really been eating'?,
2) How much healthier could ETL be, and 3) Could it be enough
healthier to make a difference in your energy?. The 6 week
experience should answer these questions. Let us know what you
find out !
Claudia
p.s. - There are plenty of women over 45 who are following this
diet-style. The people who do this are really all ages.
