I'm going to be going on a residential course in a week and the nutritionist there is familiar with E2L. Can I just check my beliefs about the primary differences between McDougall and Fuhrman? I don't want to start a debate or anything...compared to the whole range of diet "gurus" out there, they agree with each other for about 95% of it, they just disagree around the edges as far as I can tell. Please excuse any misconceptions I have about Fuhrman as I find it hard to get specific information about his diet (I've never seen him or McDougall in any library or bookstore near where I live). I couldn't get a good idea from his website and have had to rely on what I've gleaned from posts over the years and from the Fatfree FAQs.
1. The biggest one seems to be that McDougall and Fuhrman reverse how they see starchy vegetables & grains and beans. McD would emphasize starchy vegetables & whole grains and limit beans to one cup a day. Fuhrman would do the opposite: encourage beans and limit starchy vegetables to a cup a day (and leave out grains entirely??). Obviously I'm generalizing and it varies by whether it's regular program or MWL or the initial 6 weeks and any individual circumstances... Both encourage virtually unlimited amounts of nonstarchy vegetables.
2. Fuhrman recommends certain quantities of high fat plant foods like nuts and seeds. McDougall recommends limiting high fat plant foods to varying degrees based on current health status and goals.
Are those pretty much the major differences that I would need to know for my stay? Anything that's going to really surprise me?
Thanks in advance.
Karin
