In order to really reap the benefits of this plan, you must follow it longer. The first 2 or 3 days are tough as your body adjusts to the diet. Once you get through that period, you will find your hunger is so much more controllable than on the McDougall plan.
I'm not trying to knock McDougall, I am just relating the experience I had on the plan. I felt 100x better than when I was eating SAD, it's just that after about 6 months, I started noticing things. I seemed to get hungry all the time. I was constantly fighting cravings. While Dr. McDougall does advocate eating numerous meals, my problems with addictive eating patterns just seemed to get worse. I had issues with very dry skin. When I smiled, it felt like my skin would split. I had flaky dried skin on private areas of my body that I won't go into any further detail. I did lose a lot of weight and I felt great when exercising.
In February 2005, Dr. Fuhrman gave a free presentation in Atlanta, so I went and listened. I purchased a book there and after his presentation and reading the book, I gave it a try. It was very difficult the first few days, like you described, but then, I found my cravings were much less and my hunger came on very slowly and easily as opposed to the sudden ravenous urges I would get eating any other way.
I believe this is the best way for me to eat. It is difficult to follow at times because, let's face it, it's a SAD world. If McDougall works for you, great, but some others have had difficulties following it and have tried a different route. I do believe both plans are excellent and would achieve huge amounts of health improvements in the general population of the world if everyone followed them, not to mention a drastic reduction in fossil fuels. They are both brilliant physicians. I wish they were the majority instead of the minority.

Peace,

Michael
