My weight loss slowed down too as I got closer to goal. First, double check to be sure you are not adding in "some extras" (food or portions not on the program). Second, plateaus are a natural part of the weight loss process as Dr. F explains in his book and as do many fitness experts. The key is to hang in there, because if you are following the plan, you will lose again! A plateau can last several weeks. Once the loss picks up again, it will likely not continue at the rate of your initial loss because you had more to lose then. When I was within 10 lbs of my goal, I lost about a pound a week! Slow...but it adds up over time. Lastly, if you can increase your exercise time a bit each session or start exercising if you don't(even just a short walk each day), that may help jolt your body into loss again.
Good luck. Mostly, just hang in there; you will lose again if you truly have 40 lbs to go!
