I had a struggle at Thanksgiving time...I splurged "just a little" here and there and before I knew it, I was back in the pleasure trap.
I sat my (bigger) behind down and re-read the book. Twice. AND re-read, "Breaking the Food Seduction". That did the trick for me. It came ~7 pounds later, but I am now, finally, back to where I was before getting caught in the pleasure trap.
Nothing helps me like those two books to get through to me. Those unhealthy/disease causing "foods" are so "addicting" because it is our very instincts working against us here; our instincts for millions of years have held us in good stead: seek pleasure, avoid pain, and do those two things with the least amount of energy expenditure possible.
So, you put candy in your mouth and the instincts say, "Heyyy, lots of fat, and sweet to boot (our sweet tooth came from evolution as well so we'd pick out ripe fruit)...this is good for survival!" So you get a nice little hit of dopamine, the pleasure chemical. Our instincts are befuddled by all these unnatural "foods" -- ultra-high in fat, protein, and too sweet. So we keep getting the pleasure hits, we keep going back for more....and we watch our health suffer in confusion.
Getting educated about how my brain is operating with regard to all the garbage out there helps me to take back my own power and choice. Most of the time I don't even view that stuff as food for me anymore. Kind of the same as if a cow came across a porkchop -- it's just not food for them.
I've been off sugar now for nearly 2 months. I smell cake and candy now and, yes, it smells sweet. But it smells sweet like a flower smells sweet: I enjoy the smell, but I don't feel compelled to put it in my mouth! :)
I would definitely suggest reading both books. They've worked for me every time.
