People tend to think that children can eat lots of junk food and animal products because children don't get heart disease or cancer as much as adults. Then, when you go to the doctor when you're 50 and he says to lose weight, eat less fat, etc. that you need to start worrying about these things. In fact, the time to start eating healthier is when a child is young. For one, it starts a life-long habit of healthy eating and second, it has a greater effect on diseases later in life. My daugher just turned 8. She's been a vegan since birth, but we have just switched to a more Fuhrman-type diet. However, she's never had meat or dairy or refined sugar. She occasionally eats things with alternative sweeteners. She has rarely been sick- no ear infections, no asthma, no problems at all. Only used medication once, when her toe got infected, she took an antibiotic. She's a beautiful, healthy, lively, smart, energetic, happy girl. She's a little on the small side- 10th-15th percentile for both height and weight. Also, she was breastfed for 3 1/2 yrs. I like Dr. Fuhrman's approach because he is looking at it from a health perspective, rather than an animal rights perspective, so it comes across as less biased. Also, he does not use the usual "baby steps" approach- just make small changes in your diet. Small changes don't work and people don't notice a difference. He tells people what they don't want to hear- completely change your diet. Stop eating junk. Not just cut down on it. Also, he is research-based, with footnotes, etc. Besides the research, it is also backed by his experience in practice as a physician. I agree- great book. Blessings, Ron
