This is a good question and still a little challenging for me to get right.
I shop about every five days and find that to work best. Kroger is my spot for most buys, but I like the fruit best at Meijers, and I make a weekly trip to Wild Oats for the rest. I buy a big enough bundle of apples (5-6), bananas (10 or so), a bag of oranges, etc. for fruit. I also buy 5-7 bags of Dole or Fresh Express Organic, Romaine/spinach salad greens. I buy 2 bags of broccoli slaw (each bag lasts me one-two days) and maybe a large pack of mushrooms. I also usually need another jar PB (smucker's or Krema or Wild Oats or Kettle natural PB)weekly too.
Every two weeks or so:
I also buy canned, no sodium green beans (5 cans) and no sodium peas (5 cans) for times when I'm in a pinch. On that same "larger shopping trip" I pick up 5-8 energy bars mentioned in my previous response, 5-8 cans of beans (garbanzos, black, kidney), and 8-10 16 ounce packages of frozen greens/veggie mixes. Lastly I usually buy a tub of hummus and a package of whole grain wraps (ezekiel or tortill factory) or whole wheat mini-bagels (pepperidge farm) on that trip.
I purchase flax meal (Bob's Red Mill at Kroger's is the cheapest) once a month, as well as a few packs of soy nuts and sunflower seeds.
All this said, I do usually find i have holes now and then and have to make an extra trip. That's why I say, I don't have it figured out yet. But I do know a weekly trip plus a two-week "extra big" trip seems to do it most of the time.
