Dr. Fuhrman allows a little bit of sugar in recipes, but he always specifies date sugar. In my opinion, with only 1/2 tsp for an entire recipe, it doesn't really make much difference whether it's date sugar, sucanat, or another vegan sugar. In this recipe (which I think I recognize as my adaptation of a non oil-free one), the sugar really makes an important contribution to the taste of the sauce. If you really don't want to use the sugar, you might try replacing the water with apple juice.
