Dr. Fuhrman mentions in his book that for the 6-week plan initially, you can eliminate grains or the starchy veggie from the diet. So the answer is yes you can. The base of his plan is really the fruits/veggies/legumes trio. That said, you can eat a potato or corn instead of the grain--maybe that works better for you? Especially if you're active though, you may want to add oatmeal, a piece of 100% whole wheat toast, brown rice or something in that family on the life plan. For salad dressing, I "cheat" a bit and find a very low cal/low fat/low sodium bottled dressing to use (Annie's low fat honey mustard dressing, Ken's sundried tomato dressing and Ken's balsamic vinegrette are two good ones carried by Kroger or Wild Oats). He has scome recipes in his books for making your own dressing if you want to avoid cheating! On the initial 6-week plan, it would be best to avoid soy sauce and extra sauces like Asian sauces. In the life plan, you could probably add some of the lower sodium,least-processed sauces back in on a limited basis--since there is a bit of leeway in the plan for extras. However, the Dr. is not big on processed food and all the added ingredients that tend to be in these sauces. Think minimal portions if you do use them. The Dr. does advocate using spices a lot and uses a product called vege-base by Vogue to impart flavor. As for oils, he advocates staying away from them in his book, if at all possible, so I only use the spray can oils that give a light coat. "Frying" things in stock (veggie) instead of oil is one idea I've used successfully too. Good luck.
