Yes. To get nutrients plants need light and water at least. Everything done in the field can be recreated in artificial environments or through modifying the crops. the links in the original posting had stuff on wheat that can be grown in space even with no soil and efficiently. I've discussed it with friends who know and read enough from experts to know that this is possible. You could grow food close to the populations that need it and literally anywhere. I think using wind or solar to power them would help too. And Nasa's developed technologies, that if implemented on earth would dramatically affect how sewage is conducted and could lower the amount of water we take from the environment. There's alot going on in the labs, but most of it's for different purposes, if this technology would be applied presently, much of the destruction done in agriculture could be eradicated. And think about how rapidly computers advance, how quickly medicine advances, but in food production it's basically the same as it's been for centuries, and it may not have seemed a problem when there was lots of open land, but the population has increased. The current ag companies have so much power and the control govt's stance on ag, that they will not change on their own or even under pressure from the public. It's a capitalist economy and unfortunately the only way to beat the current powers is to circumvent their products. I am critical on here, but I don't like to criticize I want to help make a change. I am glad that you are interested in what I say, people like you who at least open your mind will be the ones who actually help, I think? Just by avoiding meat people make a huge change. And yes even talking about chemicals and gmo helps a little too, but I live in a state that is nearly a big hoglot/corn field/bean field and I know it could be beautiful if it were back to it's original prarie ecosystem. The only way it will get there is to completely change the food production system in our country.
