I forgot to include a "couple drops of dish liquid" to the recipe for getting rid of fruit flies:

2 cups water in a jar with/
2T sugar
2T vinegar (white if possible)
couple drops of dish liquid (that's what kills the flies)

It works wonders within a few days!
