Penny,
I have a question re: Pinon Pine trees planted in an urban setting and how to water. Case in point: we have a condo in a 5 unit complex and there are two pinon pines in two seperate raised planter boxes made of concrete blocks covered with stucco. These trees have about a 5-6 inch caliper and are 15-20 ft. high. Their drip line over hangs the planter structures, and there is maybe 20-40 Sq ft within them for watering.
My issue is that the land scape guy we hire to maintain the grounds, says not to put an auto drip soaker hose, as this would promote growth, and the roots would run intothe concrete planter boxes and hasten the tree's demise. My feeling is that the trees have already sent their roots under the planter boxes and has feeder roots outside the boxes. There is a sever dought here (Santa Fe) and the pine bark beetle and pine tip moths are killing the trees all over town. we can water one day a week on the day no one is here (caretaker comes on another day) and I thinkwe should water to keep the resin level up in the trees to ward off attacking bugs. Question: how do pinons intake water; at the drip line only or would it be wise to water around the base as far out as possible within the boxes? (It is not possible to water outside the box on automatic.
Thanks,
Leon
