We're not dealing here with a issue of fundamental theology. A lot of practices and views in Catholicism have adapted to their ages and cremation is one. It's always been this way and shouldn't rattle people. Just because pagans once cremated isn't reason enough to ban the practice. Anyway, you're not a Catholic if you don't believe the spirit is immortal and that's what matters. What of Catholics who are involuntarily cremated as in terrible fires? They wouldn't make it through the pearly gates? What of Catholics in lands like Japan where there just isn't space to make coffin sized gravesites for millions and millions of people over the generations, especially when the use of that land for feeding and housing them takes priority over corpses. I already have it in my final directives to be cremated for several reasons. One is ecological and another is that we're not a rich family and I much prefer the funds that would be spent tanking the funeral director's caddy be spent on needs of my family or just to take a relaxing, well deserved vacation (which we almost never can afford) and toast me over a nice meal. Or send the money to a Catholic school to cover a poor and promising kid's tuition. Having buried two relatives traditionally, I know well how very stressful it is to deal with all the %$%## and vying interests involved in traditional burials.
