There are many different varieties of practice with Buddhism. It's mostly a matter of personal taste and what works for you. The basic objective of meditation is the same for all: to get control of the mind. For some, just consciously focusing the mind (i.e. sitting meditation) works best. For others, chanting works best. For others, it is walking. The objective is the same.

Everybody has trouble staying focused in meditation. That's the point. The moment when you think, "Oops, my mind just wandered" is the moment of awareness.

When you go to a movie theatre, how often during a typical two-hour movie are you aware of being in the theatre instead of being in the story? Once? Twice? That is a typical level of awareness for most people. There is no reason you would be better at it when sitting in a temple, unless you have done lots and lots of practice. That's why we do it.

I do a mix of chanting, sitting (tranquility) meditation and visualization. It's just what works for me, and what the groups that I have been able to practise with have done.

Keith
