Basic meditation is the same in all traditions: mindfulness. That's the one where you observe your breathing. All other meditations assume that you have mastered that. Mastery, however, for some people, takes years, so don't be in a rush to learn more advanced ones.

The best way to choose a practice tradition is to try them out. Find meditation or practice groups in your area and sit with them. Choosing a tradition is a matter of personal style. Any one of them will get you to enlightenment if you stick with it.

Sometimes it's a matter of availability. I often suspected I would have felt more at home in a Zen group, but there wasn't one nearby, so I joined a Tibetan group instead. That was fine, and I've stuck with the Tibetan tradition for over 20 years now. Sticking with one tradition is probably more important than choosing the "right" one, although obviously you do not want to be in a group that makes you uncomfortable.

Does that help?

Keith
