I just went to an intro to Zen workshop last night and it felt sooo great. Just to be around other people who are interested in following the Buddhist path felt so wonderful.
No one I know has any interest in Buddhism and my husband is Catholic and thinks Buddhism is idolatry so I feel like I have to be really discreet at home and I even turn my books over so the titles don't show so obviously.
Being part of a community is one of my goals and I still feel residual excitement today after attending the function last night.

Concerning the alcohol you mentioned at one center's function--that seems a bit strange. Personally that would bother me. There is a difference between people drinking on their own at home and actually serving alcohol at a center.
