I first started studying Buddhism in 1978, after picking up a book on Zen by Alan Watts. (Long story, involving nostalgia for the '60s.) As far as I knew, I was the only Buddhist in the city where I was living. I survived by reading as much as I could. I got myself on the mailing list for a Buddhist book publisher (Shambhala, still one of the best), so I got their catalogue avery three months or so, and could order directly from them. A few years later, I moved to a larger city, where I got in touch with a meditation group through asking around at the Religious Studies department of the university. The rest, as they say, is history. The highlight of my "Buddhist life" was a pilgrimage to India 20 years ago (Yikes, has it been that long?!) to visit the Buddhist holy sites and to meet and receive initiations from H.H. the Dalai Lama.
