I think the Dhammapada is a good place to start. At least, for me it was. There are lots of different translations. I wish I had it in front of me right now so I could tell you the translation I have (which I like). It's kind of thick orange paperback with a picture of the Buddha on the front. They have the dhammapada printed twice--once all the way through, and then secondly with a commentary for each verse. I've also read _The Stillpoint Dhammapada_ which is a contemporary rendering. Very very clear and easy to understand with stories for each part. I really enjoyed it. Keith also recommended _The Way of the Bodhisattva_ by Shantideva to me a while ago and it's really great. It's from the Tibetan tradition but I think it's helpful for any tradition. The part on patience has been pretty helpful for me.
