Jennifer,

My baby is almost 6 months and I have been trying to figure out what is wrong since day one. Here is what's going on..

Presently baby is on Prevacid 7.5mg 2x per day for her reflux, it seems to help. When she is off the meds she is much more collicky, however right now her gass is through the roof, especially at night. She wakes after sleeping about 3-4 hours and then from that point on she wakes, squirming, crying, and passing gass, often needing her legs pumped to get the gas out, this occurs every hour and then she wakes up before the sun. This is followed by a mucousy green poop that smells very weird. She has been unable to have a steady napping scedule and often does not nap for more than 15mins.

In the past she was pooping so many times a day,and diarhea, during this time the GI had me go on Neocate, but I did not like the idea and stopped after about 4 days, also she was refusing the bottle. She is an exclusively breastfed baby and even refused pumped milk from a bottle.

Here is my history.
Birth was 14 hours, epidural, pitocin to speed dialation, she was 9lbs at birth, and I tore a little. We had a very difficult time getting her on the breast as she was extremely gassy and collicky from the beginning and was not getting it. On the 3rd day after she was refusing the breast and not getting enough milk from pumping I broke down and gave her formula out of desperation and a 4am discussion with my midwife, not to mention I had still not slept since her birth. I was then able to get an adequate amount from pumping and she took a bottle of pumped breast milk for the first 8 days, but then all the sudden she got on the breast and never got on the bottle again. I thought that she had a good latch, but I am not sure, as one of my major issues is oversupply.

She gulps, chokes, and sputters at the breast. It never has hurt much, but there are times when the letdown is painful, as well as many times a sessions, this hasn't happened in a while. She has never taken a pacifier.

She has doubled her weight 18lbs, maybe a little more and is very chunky. She eats only about 10-20mins. at a time sometimes less and very frequent, like every 11/2 to 2hours. At night, side lying position, in the day, sitting up and I try to lean back or pull away from her to slow my milk down. Also, in order to empty a breast, she has to nurse on one side for 3-4 hours. I think her feeding is inefective.

Of course the food ellimination part has been driving me crazy. I have elliminated everything, but really her symptoms have never really significantly changed. I do think that she definately has a sensitivity to dairy, as it seemed like she got a lot worse after I introduced it back. I am not sure about gluten and wheat, right not I eat a dairy, wheat, and gluten free diet and it is very difficult, especially since it doesn't seem to be working, which is what makes me think this is really something else. Also no family allergens that I know about.

Could the prevacid cause extreme gas? I am so conflicted about her being on the meds, but I am so frustrated and don't know what to do. The days are better, but nights keep getting worse. Some days are worse than others.

I am also experiencing some problems, I have had gas since pregnancy and can't seem to understand what causes it specifically, as well as constipation and hemmroids. I also think I might have a yeast infection, I am waiting for a call back from my doc. What do you mean by mucous, I have a lot of discharge, but I have always had that. I also have bouts of low blood sugar, where I become shaky, clammy, and dizzy, this seems like it happens when I don't eat enough protein. Right now I eat a lot of the same things, turkey burgers, lamb, chicken, steak, pork, fish, rice, eggs, zuchini, squash, asperagus, artichoke, spinach, green beans, carrots, beets, celery, cucumbers, lettuce, fruit, rice bread, rice cakes, gluten free corn flakes, cookies, pancakes, and rice milk, peanut butter and jelly, nuts, and maple syrup, oh and 1 cup of coffee.

How can you tell if she is tongue tied? I have spoken with lactation consultants, and saw one at one point (2 months), who thought the latch was good. I live in Key West, Fl and the closest LC is a 3 hour drive.

Any help will be appreciated.
