Much to the chagrin of our whole family, my 17 year old is having a baby. No matter what else, we've made it clear to her that the baby's welfare is paramount, and I am approaching this with the expectation that she will bf, having her talk to lactation consultants in advance of delivery, etc. She's near enough to the end of her own growth that I don't see any reason at all why nursing would pose a problem for her. But apparently, the doctors encourage younger teens to bottle feed because they themselves are still growing. There is one 14 year old who goes to the same clinic who told my daughter that her doctor said she'd get osteoporosis if she nursed. Wait a minute - if girls that young can get pregnant at all, wouldn't you think nature would've arranged that they can nurse too??? What's up with this?
