apparantly you missed the boat here... to say that the plot was horrible is simply naive. also, the point of the movie isn't to be "clever" or "different". the plot, actually, is quite complex and brilliant, if you can wrap your head around it. remember in the movie when they discussed irony? the whole movie is one big irony, not to mention a time-piece, i.e. to show the shallow mentality of "inside the paradigm" thinking of the 80s. you are meant to think that this kid is "crazy" when in actuality, HE is the forward thinker, not the motivational speaker (Patrick Swayze) or the religious nut teacher. that is set up in the beginning scene when the daughter says she is going to vote for Dukakis as opposed to Bush. that someone would question "wholesome" conservatism in the 80s was heresy.

this movie had SO many levels, you could spend weeks discussing it, quite frankly. i would guess you at between the age of 15 and 21 based on your comment. it's not a coincidence that this movie took place at that time. give it about 15 years, do some research on the 80s and then watch it again... you'll understand it a lot better ;)
