The jet engine artifact falls from a future that we don't see. This was not supposed to happen nor was it supposed to kill donnie(It just so happened that Donnie's house is located under the wormhole) This corrupts the universe and causes a tangent universe. The unexplained jet engine being the cause of it.
This damages space and time and starts a 28 day count down to the end of the universe.

Frank manipulates Donnie and sets a ensurance trap(his girl) to make sure Donnie goes through with it. So yeah the engine appears in the same place that it did originally, but now it has a REASON for being there(Donnie, the living receiver). So donnie doesnt travel time etc, he just changed the past to make it so the engine has a reason for being there.

At this point donnie can still get out of bed and the universe would still be saved but

1. That he felt the whole experience had been a dream, and was therefore laughing with relief that he had woken up from this, hence doesn't get out of bed.

2. That the journey through the Tangent Universe had solved Donnie's problem of dying alone through achieving enlightenment, and subsequently he knew he was going to "something better" (from his letter to Roberta Sparrow). He was therefore laughing through sheer joy and anticipation, and didn't want to get out of bed
