Well the appearance of an artifact is a SIGNAL of a possible tangent universe occurring, but not the trigger. The tangent universe occurred because Donnie was supposed to die. In so doing, he left all these people around him 'haunted by their memories' of what happened, i.e. the pedophile guy repented, etc. The idea throughout was that the 'master plan' was set off track and made the tangent universe, but by the end Donnie sort of understands (or at least we can infer) that all of this has been according to the master plan, to right the wrong in this one small town (maybe having a ripple effect beyond). This is kind of epitomized by when Donnie says 'not if you move within god's channel' regarding fate.
People are always asking, after someone dies, 'what was the point of this' or 'why did it have to happen this way?' in contest of the statement 'god has a plan'. I think one of the purposes of this movie was to kind of show how the death of one person could have inexplicable chaos-effect ripples on other people's lives. A pedophile repenting and a boy being killed by a plane turbine might seem disconnected, but this movie offers a kind of understanding and omniscience.
The plane turbine hits, kills Donnie, thus closes off the tangent universe.
