I watched this movie about 10 times with a friend one night and i didn't quite get it the first
couple times. But each time i wached it i found it easier to analyze individual parts of the
movie. This last thread does put it's literal time travel aspects into place. But it doesn't
explain why donnie does what he does or anything to that effect. When the airplane engine
travels though the time warp it actually creates another universe, what is called the "tangent"
universe. The tangent universe being donnie interacting with frank when he is drawn out of
bed just before the engine crashes into his house. When the alternate universe branches off
of the existing universe it is unstable and when it collapses in 28 days it will take the other
universe with it thus ending the world. Frank is meant to guide donnie to the realization that
he must close the tangent universe. The only way to do this is to sacrifice himself by staying
in bed. If he doesn't both universes will parish. So by donnie committing suicide he saves
the world and the lives of gretchen and frank. And the characters display feelings of deja vu
from the tangent universe such as when frank touches his right eye, and when gretchen
waves at donnie's mother and they show familiarity between eachother.
