I am also confused by this. I understand the whole thing where Frank sets an ensurance trap but how does this ensurance trap work? Does Donnie use his parents' car as a time travel vehicle to get back to the primary universe? It said in the book that the artifact (engine) had to be returned to the primary universe and that the Living Receiver (Donnie) had to do that. So how did Donnie do that? Was it because he let the engine crush him that things went back to normal? And if things were back to normal, why was the plane engine there at all? The book said that artifacts appeared if a tangent universe had been created. But if Donnie gotten the world out of the tangent universe, the engine shouldn't have been there anymore. I really liked the movie, but it needs some extra explanation.
