Subject:         My son and hypertension (scare of our lives last night)

My son is 15 years old. Years ago he was diagnosed as "white collar" hypertension. Basically, he's terrified of the doctors office and will always have high blood pressure when he goes to a doctors office but, at home he has always been fine. Never too high.

So last night I was doing his usual weekly b/p check and it was 180/100! And I couldn't get it to come down. So I drove him 90 miles to the ER and they did a complete check over to make sure he is okay. Everything came out fine EXCEPT his cholesterol. His HDL is low and his LDL is high. The ratio between the 2 is even bad. So the doctor shows him all these tests results and did a GREAT result explaining them to him and then explained high blood pressure, the silent killer.

My poor son, the doctor had his full and undivided attention because he heard the words "silent killer". He absorbed everything the doc said (yea!) and after a discussion of diet and exercise, the doc left the room to get his discharge papers and prescription for blood pressure meds.

My son, poor kid, I could tell he was really worried about his health now... he looked at me and said "That's it! I am a vegetarian from now on." He had been following his dads "atkins diet" even though I objected and complained and told him about my worries. Now he sees why I am not on that diet (I had a mini-stroke).

We are now on a healthier lifestyle change together (I am already on mine, I am just helping him along). I really want him to have a great start for the whole experience. So I am looking for sites on vegetarianism that just has the facts, like "eat this much fruit a day..." and "you can find calcium in these foods" and some recipes.

I am going on Sparkpeople to get a menu idea because I want him to ENJOY this new lifestyle. and if anyone has any information on HDL and why it's important, I would LOVE some help explaining that. I told him the basics but he wants details.

Thanks so much in advance.
