I use Marmite, which is very similar to Vegemite, but
I think Vegemite is saltier. The British (and also
others from Commonwealth countries) do the Marmite-on-
toast thing, but I can't eat it that way. I use it
like your mother did, as a condiment or flavoring. It
has a "beefy" taste and is a real flavor booster (in
small amounts) in soups, etc.

for a flavoring:
