I really don't know what was the "secret" to those biscuits-- they don't seem to have that variety anymore. But you can use any flaky buttermilk biscuit recipe, such as the following one from master baker Peter Reinhart at the Fine Cooking magazine website: http://www.taunton.com/finecooking/recipes/flaky- buttermilk-biscuits.aspx but use very cold regular (not whipped) earth Balance in place of the butter, and soy or nut milk, with a little lemon juice added to curdle it, instead of the buttermilk.
