how big a crock pot do i need to cook , say, 1 cup of beans? and what is the trick to make them come out right, without having all that gas in them or them being hard, or bland, or otherwise annoying?

what effect does salt have on the beans? does it help or hurt the proces, or is it merely a flavoring?

what about onions? do they have any special powers? add them raw or sauteed? add at the beginning of cooking or at the end?
