The reason you need to increase the overall amount of calcium you take in if you eat a lot of protein is because overeating protein causes your body to leech calcium from your bones.

That is why the U.S. recommendation for calcium is so high. People in North America eat way too much protein in the form of meat, eggs, and dairy. It has also been said that the calcium from dairy is very coarse and it is hard for the human body to assimilate it effectively.

The World Health Organization's recommendation for calcium is only around 500mg, probably because most parts of the world don't have such excessive intakes of protein.
