I am Indian, so my mom was vegetarian, but my dad, who was from Pakistan, near the Afghani border, was not. I've spent a lifetime with mixed feelings about eating meat. I didn't eat alot--just some chicken and fish occasionally--but I never felt quite right about it. Philosophically, I believe that we, like all creatures, kill to eat. I believe it's most important to honor whatever we kill, whether it is a lettuce or a fish, by doing something with that day and that energy which gives back to the world equal or more than what we took. But last week I finished reading Robbins' "Food Revolution" book, and I haven't eaten any meat since. Like you, I simply couldn't stand the thought of the pain and discomfort of the creatures about to become food. I was always aware of the negative environmental impacts of raising cows and pigs, but the book alerted me to the almost-as-bad problems with farmed fish and chickens. I haven't made any kind of permanent commitment to vegetarianism, but I find myself very comfortable and happy-- lighter. I had falafel for breakfast, an amazing avocado/carrot sandwich for lunch, and a smorgasbord of seaweed, nuts, and other great things for dinner. I'm happy to discover this website, and look forward to thinking very consciously about every bite I put in my mouth for the rest of my life. Sanjay (Cambridge, Mass.)
