An excellent place to start would be to read the book: "Food Revolution" by John Robbins. To most of us vegetarians/vegans (i.e. "veg*ns"), this book (and his previous bestseller: "Diet for a New America") is generally considered the best authority on why a veg diet is a good thing. It turns out that going veg*n is good for your own health, the health of the environment and for the health of the animals. There really is no downside (except for the peer pressure you mentioned). If you want to go veg, lose weight and achieve optimal health, I highly recommend reading the book: "Eat to Live" by Joel Fuhrman MD. There is an excellent review of his book here at VegSource. There are also many folks here that follow the McDougall plan diet. Both plans are excellent.

By the way, this "Awakenings" forum does not see much traffic. You may wish to look at some of the more active forums here at VegSource:
New Veggies/Grogan
The Pub/open 24 hrs!

Personally, I usually like to hang out at the
Eat to Live/Fuhrman and
Veganism/Stepaniak

Once again, Welcome!
