Yes going vegan can be excellent for your health - but only if you choose the right foods (you're on the right track with "lots of vegetables"). I highly recommend reading the book "Eat to Live" by Joel Fuhrman MD. He is a medical doctor who specializes in nutritional science and the connection between diet and disease. Although this book is marketed to folks who need to lose weight, it is really a comprehensive mini-course on human nutrition describing the optimal diet for health and longevity (whole plant foods - i.e. vegan). There is an excellent review of this book here at VegSource (and there is also a VegSource forum dedicated to us fans of "Eat to Live"). There are other authors who have written about vegan nutrition (I've read many of them), in my opinion, Dr Fuhrman is the most accurate and thorough. (Be sure to read the testimonials at the bottom of the book review article.) If you could get your parents to read this book they would really respect your decision to go vegan (and might even join you!)

I am envious of you. I switched vegetarian at age 20 then turned vegan at age 44 (3 years ago). I only wish I knew at your age (16), what I know now. You are a wise (and lucky) soul indeed to have discovered the truth so early!

Welcome to the wonderful world of vegan! - ridgerunner
